Careers in Education & Teacher Cadet

Program Description

The Careers in Education/Teacher Cadet program is two year curriculum that takes the first steps towards a variety of careers in the education world. It gives students the opportunity to explore different career options that are available in the educational system. The curriculum will explore the theories of human development and the various stages of children from birth through their teen years.

This class will focus on the history of education in the United States and how schools impact society. Students will explore and analyze both the positive and negative aspects of various employment opportunities including potential job openings, areas of shortages, earnings, advancement options, licensing requirements, expectations, applicable law and more.

Students will learn about all types of learners, how they change physically, cognitively, emotionally, and socially, and how that impacts the way they are taught. Students will also learn how to design an instructional plan, choose teaching strategies, and create an effective learning environment.

Students have the opportunity to participate in the Teaching and Community Service competitions through the SkillsUSA student organization.

Work based learning opportunities in the county include local elementary and middle schools, speech and language pathologist, school social worker and local pre-schools.

Students attend Teaching Conferences at Central Michigan University, Saginaw Valley State University, and Oakland University.

Colleges that visit our program to talk about the Teacher Education Program include: Central Michigan University, Saginaw Valley State University, Mott Community College, U of M Flint, Eastern Michigan University, Oakland University, Oakland Community College, and Delta College.
