LCHAMP

The Lapeer Cooperative Highly Accelerated Mathematics Program (LCHAMP) is designed to allow mathematically gifted students to master the standard high school mathematics curriculum within a two year period – consisting of two years of algebra, a year of geometry and a fourth course including trigonometry and college algebra as major components. LCHAMP covers the equivalent of one year of high school mathematics in one semester: the two algebra courses are covered during the first year and the geometry and trigonometry/college algebra are covered in the second year of the program. All LCHAMP curricula are aligned with the Michigan High School Mathematics Content Expectations and the national High School Course Assessment (in compliance with the Race to the Top grant assessment system).  Students completing the two years of CHAMP successfully are ready to begin the study of calculus.

To be eligible for LCHAMP, a student must take the ACT examination and earn both a score of at least 21 in the Mathematics section and a composite score of at least a 23. These scores must be earned before the student enters high school. Thus, LCHAMP classes are composed of students with very high mathematical ability.

LCHAMP classes meet weekly for 2 ½ hours with a study session offered later in the week and online support available 24/7.  At the end of each semester, a course grade for each student is reported to the home school. Grades are reported as letter grades, with the use of plus and minus. Students in LCHAMP receive high school mathematics credit for LCHAMP courses, although there are variations among the home schools in how this credit is recorded on the student’s high school transcript.

CHAMP is modeled after the highly successful program which has been offered by The Johns Hopkins University since 1971. CHAMP has been in operation since 1986.
